VW LT 28 campervan

Well not a good three weeks for us with me and the boy having a respiratory lurgy the week before last . Then this week the boys been ill again with an ear infection that just won’t go away . Oh and it’s mostly been raining .

Anyway in between all of that I have made some progress.

I started with this .

After quite a bit of welding it was made good .

Tidied up with some paint and the passenger footwell is done .

Now to a quick tidy up of the drivers footwell with my expert helper .

Well this didn’t go to plan . There was a previous repair done before I got the van. It’s always looked well done but I decided to strip, check for any corrosion and repaint.

Yep you know what’s coming . A quick blast with the heat gun to remove the paint and seam sealer .
I lent on the floor for balance and the whole floor moved. The seam sealer was “sticky stuff” . The welding was there for show only and the repair panel had been stuck down with some mig beads for show only .

No problem . The MOT is only next Tuesday. So that’s a work in progress. I guess I should have left alone but I did find a 2 inch hole in the floor near the steering column so I’m glad a had a good look .

Aye, welding upside down is such fun. It certainly looks better for it. I have picked up an extra couple of burn holes today too. It's always mid weld just when you can't stop!

Some good progress there! And good to see the 'prent hard at work. Hope his ear infection is getting better 😊

Thanks Sandy .

Progress is progress. It was the weld splatter beneath my watch strap beneath my overalls that really got me 🤣 . Anyway there’s loads of time before the MOT on Tuesday 🙄

The boys getting there thank you 🤞

I was meaning to ask...what tyres are you running?

Are they 14" rims?

Mine are 195/70/15, vredestein comtrac 2. Got a good deal from Camskill, £75 a corner. (Local garage fitted them for me)

I used my local macconechies time before last time. They had just been bought out by hellfrauds. Manager says I'll give you the Macc price as you're local, which was iirc £95 a corner. Same tyre hellfrauds price was nearly £40 dearer. Same place, same tyre, different company ethic

So Camskill for the last one, cost me £20 removal of old tyre, disposal and fit/balance. So, yes marginally dearer in price, but I didn't have to drive 76 miles to get them and have them fitted, so effectively wiped £21.09 off the price by not having to put diesel in to get them. Yeah, £7.03 a bloody gallon.

I have two spare T4 wheels, when I'm feeling flush, I fit a new tyre, and then a bit later another. That way I can replace tyres in pairs, usually six months or so apart. Always keep the best one for spare. Also means I can clean and paint them between fitting.

It’s a never ending job painting the wheels . I usually get two years ish before the rust spots start to come back .

I always factor in the cost of fuel into going to get something. We are no where near as remote as you but I try and clump purchases together or pay online postage if that works out cheaper.

My two tyres were £140 fitted so I was pleased with that . I’ll never wear them
out. The last two rears had loads of tread left but had started to crack slightly.

I’m guessing it’ll be two new fronts next year as they are 5 years old. Again loads of tread left (it’s rear wheel drive) . The tyre life is not helped by sitting out in the sun and all weathers .
