200Tdi Head Gasket or Something Else?

Even with the amount of wear on those shells, Im surprised that a piston contacted valve(s) due to that alone.
Do you have an oil pressure gauge..?

It would have been interesting to measure piston protrusion and check the gasket thickness.

Could the valve(s) be opening too far? tappet clearances or cam timing out..?

What head gasket did you pull off (how many holes)?
Any signs of the block or head being skimmed..?

Bit of info here;

I did measure piston clearances/heights before putting the new head on with a DTI gauge, and they were all in spec.

I don’t know why the bearings failed necessarily, but I’ve put a new set of shell bearings in it with a thicker head gasket so I can drive the thing to move it out of the way when I need to. All the tappet clearances have been checked and tested every time the rocker shaft has come off!

I used an Elring 3 hole gasket, the 1.5 mil thick one. I’ve tracked down a replacement short block to use my new cylinder head, but if someone in Kent/South East would sell me a short block/complete engine, PM me!
