Wonky Wheels

In Fourth Gear
Hi, hope everyone is well and happy.

I noticed that the 2014 Defender 90 OS front wheel is facing slightly outwards. The NSF is ok. Have not been able to upload any images for some reason, but there is a definite Marty Feldman vibe there. It drives and corners perfectly well.

Is it something that can be sorted simply or is a trip to the local garage on the cards? I am as technically gifted as Michael McIntyre is funny.

Thanks,

Nick.

Can you see if there is any play in the steering?
If possible, jack the front up (on level ground with wheels chocked) and try to feel if there is any play in the track rod ends.
Im suggesting checking that first, as it sounds like the tracking is out, but unless you've hit a large rock or pothole, then it may be play in a TRE, and if so then driving any distance could be dangerous...

thanks for replying, Mikeau.

There's no play and nothing looks loose or out of place, only noticed it this morning. ProTyres in Corby are going to check the alignment on Thursday morning. I was driving it yesterday for about 90 minutes, but on A and B roads with the usual surface damage, but didn't hit anything. Will let you know.

Do you know if anyone else has issues sometimes when attempting to upload images to the site from a Mac? They're just jpeg files. Weird.

I wonder if it’s just a case of the tracking gone out of line …or even a tyre gone out of shape which I had once …albeit on a Insa remould ..

Not so sure about the Mac thing I can’t afford one 🤣

Ok. Make sure they use the correct settings and not series ones.

The tracking is different on 90's and 110's (Defenders) to the Series two and three.

If I go in with the S3 for tracking I take the green bible with me to show them the figures, or they default to the 90/110/defender settings.

Or vice-versa...

There was a thread not long ago about correct tracking...

Note that its toe-out for Defender.
Some places will look at Series and set for toe-in.

Right. I went this morning and they tried for an hour to remove the nuts, using brute force and heat, but no go. I gave them the GenSpec sheet. They didn't want to go too far with the heat and mess it up, so fair play to them. Will get it done at home, hopefully. Can somebody let me know what parts will be needed? Apologies for the sheer size of the image.

They mentioned nuts and track rod ends.
You reckon it's ok, as to me - ignorant - it looks way out. Have just been quoted £750 to sort it plus check fluids at an LR garage. Do you reckon it's ok to drive or should it be looked at properly? Won't it wear the tyres unevenly? I drove it home very quickly from the tyre place and it handled superbly, so I haven't got a clue how to proceed.

If you are going to replace the whole bar then yes you could go with those. Heavy duty are an upgrade (obviously).
Most people would free off the track rod ends (TREs) and replace them.

Depends how much work you (dont) want to do...

What they are heating up is the lock nut .. and threaded section that is the bar and track rod end .. a common fault on most vehicles .. get it home and give it plenty of releasing oil over a couple of weeks .. and then try again .... but what is confusing me is that the vehicle you have is a 2014 defender 90 .... and yet the receipt says ... series 3 .1977 to 1983....??? so what am i missing here ...???
